Plaster Relief Fireplace Surrounds

The fireplace is the one wall in the house people stand at rather than walk past. It is also the one with rules: clearances, heat, an opening that has to stay exactly where it is. Cast plaster relief, fitted around all of it, from $3,200 in Jacksonville.

The wall itself

What it is

The sculpted field around the firebox — the portal, which is the vertical face framing the opening, and usually the breast above it. On larger projects the hearth apron comes in too, so the relief carries down to the floor instead of stopping at the mantel line.

Cast gypsum modules are cut and fitted to your actual opening, the joints filled, and the whole field painted as one surface. The mantel, if you keep it, becomes the horizontal the composition is built against.

Clearances come before pattern. Gypsum is a mineral and does not burn, but the rule that matters is the clearance to combustibles printed in your fireplace's manual, and it governs everything behind the finish as well. We keep the sculpted field outside those distances, we don't work inside the firebox, and we don't touch the appliance's own surround plate. For an older masonry fireplace with no manual left, we say so plainly and hold a conservative margin.

A wood-burning fireplace will lay soot on whatever is above it. Painted relief takes repainting — that is the honest maintenance answer, and it is the same answer as for the flat wall it replaces.

Price

What this wall costs

Fireplaces vary more than any other wall we do, so each price below is tied to the area it assumes. The portal alone is a smaller job than the portal plus the breast up to the ceiling — a figure without square footage would be a guess dressed as a quote.

Semi-custom

Portal in a studio pattern

from$3,200
$3,200–3,800 · about $60–75 per sq ft, installed

48 sq ft — the face around the opening, laid out to your firebox and mantel.
2–3 weeks. The pattern is one of ours; the layout is yours.

Custom

Portal plus hearth apron

from$6,500
$6,500–8,000 · about $100–130 per sq ft, installed

60 sq ft — the relief carries down past the mantel line to the floor, with hand work over the cast base where it meets the opening.
About 4 weeks.

Hand-sculpted

Sculptural fireplace wall

from$15,000
$15,000–20,000 · about $240–430 per sq ft, installed

60–80 sq ft — no repeating element anywhere in it. Modelled by hand for this fireplace and cast from originals that exist once.
6–8 weeks.

Installed prices, Jacksonville area, free measure within 40 miles. Levelling a brick or heavily textured face, or stripping what is on the wall now, adds $300–800 of preparation — quoted before the work, not after.

Which tier

Stock, semi-custom or custom for this wall

There is no ready-made tier for fireplaces, and it isn't an upsell. A stock module is a 24-inch square repeat. Around a fireplace it has to be cut for the opening, cut again for the mantel, and stopped at the hearth — and a repeat that is cut on three sides reads as a mistake, not a pattern. So this wall type starts where the layout is drawn to your opening.

  • Semi-custom is the honest default. One of our existing patterns, scaled and arranged so the motif resolves against the firebox and the mantel rather than running into them.
  • Custom earns its money when the fireplace is the room's subject: relief that tightens around the opening and opens out towards the corners, hearth apron included, hand-worked where the eye actually lands.
  • Hand-sculpted belongs here more than anywhere else. Of all the walls in a house, this is the one people stand in front of at arm's length. A fully hand-modelled fireplace wall is the one place where $240+ per sq ft is visible from where you sit.
  • If your firebox is being replaced or moved, do that first. Our field goes on after the appliance and the framing are final — otherwise the clearances change under a finished wall.

Material

Materials and how it lasts

Cast gypsum plaster. It is a mineral material — the same family used for architectural ornament in buildings that have stood a century — and it is the reason this wall type works at all next to a heat source: gypsum doesn't burn, and it doesn't off-gas the way an engineered wood panel does when it gets warm.

That is a property of the material, not a licence to ignore the manual. The clearances printed by your fireplace manufacturer are what we build to, and if the honest answer is that the relief has to start further from the opening than you hoped, that's the answer you get.

In Florida, the fireplace wall spends most of the year in a conditioned room and a few weeks actually in use. Cast plaster is happy with that. What it is not happy with is exterior walls, wet rooms, and unconditioned porches — we don't put it there.

  • Soot from a wood fire washes off paint or is covered by repainting
  • A chip is filled, re-sculpted locally and repainted — we keep the moulds
  • Interior, conditioned rooms only — no exterior chimney breasts

Questions

Questions about fireplace surrounds

How much does a plaster fireplace surround cost in Jacksonville?

A semi-custom portal of about 48 sq ft is $3,200–3,800 installed. A custom portal with the hearth apron, about 60 sq ft, is $6,500–8,000. A fully hand-sculpted fireplace wall of 60–80 sq ft is $15,000–20,000. All include installation by our own team and a free measure within 40 miles of Jacksonville.

Is cast plaster safe around a working fireplace?

Gypsum is a mineral, not a wood product: it does not burn and it does not off-gas the way MDF does. That is not the whole answer, though. Every fireplace has a clearance to combustibles printed in its manual, and it applies to what sits behind the finish as much as the finish itself. We keep the sculpted field outside those clearances, we do not work inside the firebox, and we do not touch the appliance's own surround plate.

Can you work around an existing mantel?

Yes, and it is usually the better result. We draw the layout to the mantel you have, so the relief meets it as a deliberate edge instead of dying underneath it. If the mantel is coming off, tell us before the layout is drawn, because the composition changes completely.

Does it matter whether the fireplace is gas or wood-burning?

For the plaster itself, no. For the maintenance, yes: a wood-burning fireplace deposits soot on whatever is above it, and painted relief takes repainting the same way a flat painted wall does. The clearances in the manual also differ between appliances, and those set how close the sculpted field can come.

Can you cover an existing brick fireplace?

If the brick is sound and flat enough, yes. A heavily textured or out-of-true face needs a levelling pass first, which is the $300–800 preparation line we quote up front rather than adding later. A crumbling or damp masonry face has to be repaired by a mason before we start.

How long does a fireplace surround take?

A semi-custom portal is 2–3 weeks, a custom portal with hearth apron about 4 weeks, and a fully hand-sculpted fireplace wall 6–8 weeks. Most of that is studio time — the days spent in your living room are the short end of it.
