Sculpted Bedroom & Bed-Back Walls
The wall behind the bed is the last thing you look at at night and the first thing in the morning — and the only wall in the house with no furniture fighting it. Cast plaster relief, made and installed in Jacksonville, from $900.
What it is
Cast gypsum relief modules, fixed to the wall behind the bed, joints filled and the whole field painted so it reads as one sculpted surface rather than a set of tiles. Nothing is glued on top of decoration — the relief becomes the wall.
Three scopes cover almost every bedroom we're asked about: a panel above the headboard, a wide band the width of the bed, or the whole wall corner to corner.
Light decides more than pattern. Relief exists because of shadow, so where the light comes from matters more than which motif you pick. A sconce or a cove that grazes the surface from the side or above turns a flat field into depth; a lamp aimed straight at it flattens it back out. We plan the layout around the light you already have, and tell you honestly if a fixture wants moving.
We don't build headboards. In most of these rooms the relief takes the job a tall upholstered headboard used to do, and the bed gets lower and simpler.

What this wall costs
Three real configurations, each with the square footage it assumes. A price without an area is meaningless — a bigger wall costs more at the same rate.
Panel above the headboard
16 sq ft — four cast modules of 24×24 in: a 4×4 ft square or an 8×2 ft band.
3–5 days. Cast from patterns we already hold, so there is no wait for moulds.
Semi-custom wide panel
40 sq ft — ten modules, laid out to your wall width so the composition
resolves at the corners instead of being cut off.
2–3 weeks, most of it shop time.
Custom sculpted whole wall
90 sq ft — the wall corner to corner, with hand work over a cast base so the
relief can change density across the room.
4–5 weeks.
Installed prices, Jacksonville area, free measure within 40 miles. A wall that is out of true, or that has to be stripped of paper or panelling first, adds $300–800 of preparation — we say so at the quote, not on the invoice.
Stock, semi-custom or custom for this wall
The bedroom is the one wall type where all three tiers genuinely work, and it's worth knowing why: the field behind a bed is flat, rectangular and uninterrupted. No firebox, no screen, no ceiling fixture to cut around. A repeating cast module lands clean here in a way it never does on a fireplace or a ceiling.
- Ready-made is enough when the panel sits inside the bed's width and the wall behind it is plain drywall. This is the fastest and cheapest way to have real cast plaster in the room.
- Semi-custom starts the moment the wall is wider than the bed. Left to itself a repeat runs into the corner and stops mid-motif; semi-custom is where we draw the layout to your wall so it ends deliberately.
- Custom starts when you want the relief to change across the wall — denser behind the pillows, quieter towards the edges, resolving into flat plaster near the window. That is hand sculpting over a cast base, and it can't be faked with modules.
- We publish no fully hand-sculpted bedroom price. At $240+ per sq ft a hand-sculpted 90 sq ft wall is a different conversation, and we would rather stand in the room before naming a number. Ask, and we'll quote it.
Materials and how it lasts
Cast gypsum plaster — a mineral material, the same family used for architectural ornament in buildings that are still standing after a century. It is not MDF, not laminate, not a printed surface with a texture photographed onto it.
It belongs indoors, in conditioned rooms — which a Florida bedroom is. Gypsum is an interior material: we don't put it on exterior walls, in a shower, or on an unconditioned porch, and we'll say so rather than take the job.
The part that matters ten years out is repairability. A knock to a cast plaster relief is filled, re-sculpted locally and repainted, and because we keep the moulds there is no batch to match. A damaged MDF panel has to be replaced, and by then the finish has moved on.
- Repaintable with ordinary interior wall paint, any colour, any time
- Depth and shadow do the work — the effect survives a change of paint
- Fixings for sconces and shelves go into framing, planned before casting

Questions about bedroom walls
How much does a sculpted wall behind the bed cost in Jacksonville?
A ready-made panel above the headboard is $900–1,100 for 16 sq ft, installed. A wider semi-custom composition of 40 sq ft is $2,600–3,000. A whole custom sculpted wall of about 90 sq ft is $9,000–11,000. Prices include installation by our own team and a free measure within 40 miles of Jacksonville.
Can the panel be sized to a king bed?
Yes. The cast modules are 24 by 24 inches, so a 16 sq ft panel is four of them: a 4 by 4 ft square, or an 8 by 2 ft band. We set the layout against your actual bed width and ceiling height before anything is cast, and the joints disappear once the field is filled and painted.
Will relief be too much in a small bedroom?
That is usually a question of scale, not of quantity. In a small room we keep the relief shallow and the pattern open, and often stay with the panel above the headboard rather than the full wall. Deep, dense relief belongs on a wall you can step back from.
Can we mount sconces or a shelf on the relief?
Yes, but tell us before the layout is drawn. Fixings go into the framing behind the plaster, not into the cast surface, and cables need to come out where you want them rather than through a finished panel. Electrical work is done by your electrician before we fit the field.
Can it be repainted later?
Yes. It is cast gypsum plaster and takes ordinary interior wall paint. Relief works on shadow rather than colour, so repainting the room does not cost you the effect. A chip is filled, re-sculpted locally and repainted in place.
How long does a bedroom wall take?
A ready-made panel is 3–5 days from order to painted wall. A semi-custom composition is 2–3 weeks, most of which is shop time before anyone is in your bedroom. A full custom sculpted wall is 4–5 weeks.
