Ceiling Reliefs & Medallions
The one surface in the house nobody else is competing for, and the one where architectural relief has always belonged. A medallion around the fixture starts at $1,800 in Jacksonville; a fully sculpted ceiling is a different order of thing entirely.
What it is
Either a medallion — a sculpted field around the light fixture, drawn to its canopy — or a relief that runs across the whole ceiling. Cast gypsum modules, fixed into the framing, joints filled, the field painted as one surface.
Weight and fixing are the first questions, not the last. Overhead, nothing hangs off drywall alone: fixings go into the joists, and each module is shored while it sets. That is slower work than a wall, and it is the honest reason a ceiling uses more labour per square foot — which is already inside the prices below, not added afterwards.
Height changes the job. Over about ten feet we need staging rather than a platform, and that adds a day to the install. Worth knowing before you fall in love with the idea in a double-height room.
The light comes from underneath. A ceiling is lit from below and from the side, so shadows fall upward into the relief instead of down across it — the exact opposite of a wall. Depth that looks superb behind a bed can read as muddy overhead, so ceiling relief goes shallower and wider. That is a design decision, not a cost saving.

Stock, semi-custom or custom for this wall
There is no ready-made tier overhead, and there is a physical reason. Every ceiling has something in it — a fixture box, a fan, a vent, a smoke detector. A square repeat cut around those reads as an accident. So a ceiling begins where the composition is drawn to what is already there, which is semi-custom.
- Semi-custom is the medallion. Our pattern, arranged around your fixture's canopy so the ornament has an obvious centre. This is the tier almost every ceiling project starts with.
- Custom is the field. Once the relief leaves the fixture and crosses the room it has to negotiate the cornice, the vents and the corners — hand work over a cast base, at $100–130 per sq ft.
- Hand-sculpted ceilings are the top of what we do. Ceilings are where most of our earlier architectural work has been — private residences and clubs in Florida and New York — and at 120–200 sq ft fully modelled it is a commission rather than a purchase.
- Get the electrical done first. New fixture, moved box, added cove lighting — all of it before we draw the layout. Chasing a cable through a finished ceiling relief is the one repair that costs more than it should.
Materials and how it lasts
Cast gypsum plaster — the material ceiling ornament has been made from for centuries, and the reason those ceilings are still up. It is mineral, it is stable, and it does not sag or delaminate the way a lightweight foam or polyurethane medallion eventually does.
Overhead, the thing that lasts is the fixing rather than the finish. Ours go into the framing, and each module is supported while it sets, so nothing is relying on adhesive and optimism.
Florida ceilings live in conditioned air all year and that suits plaster. What it does not suit is a ceiling with an active leak or damp above it: that gets fixed by a roofer first, and we will say so rather than seal a problem under new ornament.

Questions about ceiling relief
How much does a plaster ceiling medallion cost in Jacksonville?
A semi-custom medallion of about 20 sq ft around the fixture is $1,800–2,400 installed, in about 2 weeks. A custom ceiling field of about 100 sq ft is $10,000–13,000 over 5–6 weeks. A fully hand-sculpted ceiling of 120–200 sq ft is $25,000–45,000 over 8–12 weeks. All include installation and a free measure within 40 miles of Jacksonville.
How is it held up overhead?
Nothing hangs off drywall alone. Fixings go into the joists, and every cast module is shored in place while it sets, which is why a ceiling takes more labour per square foot than the same field on a wall. That extra labour is already inside the prices above rather than appearing as a line at the end.
Can you work around an existing chandelier or ceiling fan?
Yes, and on a medallion that fixture is the whole point of the composition. We need the fixture's canopy size and the box position before the layout is drawn. If the fixture is being replaced, do it first, or at least tell us what is coming, because the medallion is drawn to it.
Why does a ceiling cost more than the same area on a wall?
Because working over your head is slower. Modules are held and shored while they set, cutting and filling are done from a platform, and a ceiling over 10 feet needs staging, which adds a day to the install. The per-square-foot rates are the same tiers as the walls, but a ceiling uses more of the labour side of them.
Our ceiling has popcorn texture. Can you go over it?
Not over it. The ceiling has to be flat and sound first. In older houses that texture can contain asbestos, and testing and removal is licensed abatement work that we do not do and would not pretend to. Once the ceiling is flat and sound, we start; levelling a merely uneven ceiling is the $300–800 preparation line.

Very. A ceiling is lit almost entirely from below and from the side, so the shadows fall upward into the relief instead of down across it. Depth that reads beautifully on a wall can look muddy overhead. We go shallower and wider on ceilings, and that is a design decision rather than a saving.
